College Cup victory goes to...
August 29, 2014
On a bright summer afternoon, medical students took a break from the books for an afternoon of physical fun. In the second annual College Cup, cohorts from each of the School of Medicine's seven Colleges advising groups networked with their peers – all the while competing for bragging rights and the title of College Cup champions.
The School of Medicine Alliance sponsored this annual activity. The Alliance is a charitable group that supports health education projects throughout the school that have a particular focus on enhancing the student experience. Sarah McCarty, Alliance member, was present for the College Cup and applauded the students' efforts before the awards ceremony.
"The medical students are incredibly appreciative of support from the School of Medicine Alliance for activities like the College Cup," said Nicole Deiorio, M.D., professor of emergency medicine and director of the Colleges program, OHSU School of Medicine. "Events like this help our students build camaraderie and are an essential component of the medical school experience."
After highly-spirited and often competitive games including Operation (the board game), a three-legged egg race, a medical dart contest and a tug-of-war, the Acute Care College team (below) was declared the victor.
The Undergraduate Medical Education Colleges advising system consists of seven Colleges, each representing a different practice setting. Students choose a College based on their ultimate career vision. Students are matched with faculty who have similar interests and relevant past experiences, adding individualization to their experience and providing valuable mentoring resources.
Small group sessions, labs, and social events structured around curricula including wellness, financial resources and debt management, summer opportunities, and service learning are central to the Colleges system.
