Mentors at heart of graduation celebration
Graduating students, their families and School of Medicine alumni gathered to celebrate the achievements of the graduating class at a March 19 reception hosted by the School of Medicine Alumni Association.
Also present were 35 community, faculty and alumni mentors, invited by students to acknowledge the important role they had played in helping them reach this career milestone.
Mentor Rebecca Harrison, MD R' 98, Associate Professor, Department of Medicine and co-chair, OHSU Women in Academic Medicine Committee, attended with Mary Templeton, MD, her own mentor from medical school.
"It was such a privilege for me to be there," said Dr. Harrison. "Watching the exchanges between my mentor and students I am now teaching made me realize how much we are all connected."
"The Alumni Council is committed to acknowledging the achievements of the graduating class as well as the contribution of those who have helped them," said Donald Houghton, MD '72, Professor, Department of Pathology and chair of the Alumni Relations Committee of the Alumni Association Council. "Mentors play an important part throughout most of our lives, but particularly when we are students: the mentoring relationships established here keep us connected to the School well after graduation."
