OHSU

Spring Greetings

Phil MaruchaDear School of Dentistry community,

Having recently experienced a few days of intense snow in Portland that kept my car stuck at the bottom of a steep hill overnight, I am starting to feel like a true Oregonian!  And now here we are with spring in the air.

Our new building, the Skourtes Tower in the OHSU/OUS Collaborative Life Sciences Building, is progressing rapidly and we are on track to move in early July. Right now, we are working hard to ensure all dental faculty, staff, and students know how to use the new equipment in Skourtes Tower, and understand the processes that are essential to our daily operations. A move is a big undertaking and—though bumps are inevitable-- we are beginning the planning process now to ensure a successful outcome.

You can stay on top of construction plans and progress at www.ohsu.edu/sod, and there are often current photos of our building on Facebook, www.facebook.com/ohsuschoolofdentistry. We are hoping to hold several events over the coming months to say “goodbye” to our 1956 Marquam Hill building and “hello” to our 2014 South Waterfront facility.

For those of you wishing to make a gift to Oregon’s only dental school, there are a number of naming opportunities available within the Skourtes Tower, from clinic space and group practices to operatory suites and seminar rooms. We very much appreciate the critical role the dental community is playing in this exciting phase of the school’s growth. You have all been so important to the success of our new building and we hope you will continue to be involved as we count down to the opening of Skourtes Tower. For more information about naming opportunities, please contact Chadd Oleson at (503) 494-4182.

The new Dean’s Seminar Series, designed to shape the direction the dental school’s research programs will grow, and to encourage more dental students to conduct research while in school, kicked off a few months ago. Since then, we have brought three incredibly talented researchers to campus to share their studies on topics such as tissue engineering, inflammatory pain, and oral health quality improvement efforts. The lunchtime seminars have been well-received, drawing attendees from all over the OHSU campus. I would like to extend an invitation to the entire dental community to attend the Dean’s seminars, so please stay tuned to the schedule via Web or Facebook.

I expect to see many of you in April at the Oregon Dental Conference scheduled for April 4 to 6. I’m told nearly 3,000 of the conference attendees are our alumni, and I hope you will seek me out in the various conference halls. We also have 12 DMD and three BS/RDH classes reuniting during ODC Weekend. And dental friends and alumni are invited to join students and faculty at the Alumni Association’s Annual Awards Lunch on Saturday, April 5, at the Oregon Convention Center. To register, go to www.ohsu.edu/sod/alumni.

I look forward to seeing you soon.

Warm regards,

Phil Marucha Signature
