SEE YOU AT OREGON DENTAL CONFERENCE

Gary ChiodoMarch 14, 2013

Dear School of Dentistry community,

We are gearing up for Oregon Dental Conference (ODC) weekend, which will be upon us in less than three weeks! What better way to ring in the spring than taking a moment to connect with colleagues, classmates, and friends in the dental community.

Dean Emeritus Jack Clinton, D.M.D. `64, will be at the Oregon Convention Center on Thursday and Friday of the ODC (April 4 and 5) to share progress on our new building on Portland’s South Waterfront. Construction is proceeding at a fast pace and you won’t want to miss the latest details on our new facility.

Our alumni office is helping to organize 11 reunions this year, nine of which will be held during ODC weekend.  Our DMD class of 1953 will be celebrating the 60th anniversary of their graduation from dental school—that’s pretty incredible. We have reunion classes ending in “3” and “8” who are planning dinners, dancing, golfing … even a waxing contest here at the dental school! The spirit and enthusiasm behind the dental reunions is great to see, and we appreciate the hard work from all of our reunion coordinators.

The Oregon Dental Association and Dentsply are sponsoring a student Table Clinic once again during ODC and I’m eager to see the research our students have been developing. Such experiences are so important for dental students, who already have plenty packed into their four-year curriculum. Clinical research takes a lot of organization and attention to detail, and I am pleased that our students are taking this extracurricular opportunity.

On Saturday, April 6, OHSU School of Dentistry will hold its awards luncheon. We have new board members to welcome and others who are stepping off the Board after many valued years of service. Alumni Association President Steve Beadnell, D.M.D. `80, who has worked tirelessly this past year to rally support around our new building and to encourage alumni to get involved in the Alumni Association, will be handing off the gavel to Jim Smith, D.M.D. `81, our new president for 2013-2014.

We also have a number of alumni, faculty, and dental students to recognize. Some of our deserving award winners are listed on the Alumni Association’s web site, www.ohsu.edu/sod/alumni. Please register for the lunch and join me in congratulating the individuals we are recognizing, all of whom do way more than their day-to-day share in furthering dentistry in Oregon.

See you at the Convention Center!
