Northwest Dental Endowed Scholarship Fund provided by Pacific Continental Bank
Pacific Continental Bank was established in 1972 and has grown into a northwest regional bank that targets the banking needs of community-based businesses, professional service providers (dentists, doctors, lawyers), nonprofit organizations and provides private banking services for business owners and executives.
The purpose of this fund is to provide scholarship assistance to select students at the OHSU School of Dentistry who have demonstrated the same care and concern for others that Pacific Continental Bank provides for its customers in communities throughout the Northwest.
Eligibility
- Must be a currently enrolled predoctoral DMD student
- Must be a resident of the state of Oregon or Washington
- Actively participate in community service.
- Must have completed a FAFSA application for the current academic year
- Demonstrate financial need based on OHSU's Financial Aid Office needs assessment
Award Amount
- $2,000 applied against tuition in the current year of enrollment
Application Procedures
- Complete the Pacific Continental Bank Scholarship Application and supporting documentation by Friday, February 22, 2013.
- Must include a brief essay which details your commitment to community service, future goals, and how the scholarship would help you. The essay should not exceed 500 words (two, double-spaced pages).
- Include an unofficial copy of your dental school transcript.
ODS/OHSU School of Dentistry Scholarship Fund
ODS has been committed to helping improve the oral health of Oregonians since 1955. ODS is a multi-faceted organization that provides dental, medical, pharmacy, vision and professional liability insurance products, along with a variety of business services including dental practice management software and benefits administration. Its mission is to provide the highest value insurance and business services, distinguished by exceptional customer service.
ODS has partnered with the OHSU School of Dentistry for much of its lifetime, and ODS believes strongly in the importance of helping others. The purpose of this fund is to provide scholarships to select students at the OHSU School of Dentistry who have demonstrated the same care and concern for others that ODS provides for its clients, members and partners in communities throughout the Northwest.
Eligibility
- Must be a currently enrolled predoctoral DMD student
- Must be a student in the DS3 year of dental school
- Must submit a letter of recommendation from a faculty member
- Must be in the top 50% of class standing
- Has shown leadership within their class
- Actively participate in community service
Award Amount
- $20,000 applied against tuition in the DS4 year of enrollment

- Complete the ODS Scholars Application and supporting documentation by Friday, February 22, 2013.
- Must include a brief essay which details your eligibility and your commitment to community service, future goals, and how the scholarship would help you. The essay should not exceed 250 words (one, double-spaced page).
- Include an official or unofficial copy of your dental school transcript.
Willamette Dental Foundation Scholarship
Willamette Dental Foundation is a charitable organization with a mission to support dental education. It is committed to supporting dental school students who believe in conservative care and evidence-based dentistry. The Foundation grants scholarships to qualified students who share these values.
Willamette Dental Foundation was created by a grant from Willamette Dental Group, a group in practice with more than 50 dental offices in Oregon, Washington and Idaho. Willamette Dental Group desires to recruit and retain dentists interested in a successful large group practice dedicated to delivering superior care through a partnership with its patients to stop the disease/repair cycle by means of evidence-based methods of prevention and treatment.
Eligibility
- Must be a currently enrolled third or fourth year predoctoral DMD student
- Must demonstrate a sincere commitment to becoming a practitioner of oral health, dedicated to keeping their patients well.
- Must demonstrate a strong interest in joining a group practice setting after graduation.
- Must have completed a FAFSA application for the current academic year
- Demonstrate financial need based on OHSU's Financial Aid Office needs assessment
Award Amount
- $10,000 awarded to one OHSU third year predoctoral DMD student
- $10,000 awarded to one OHSU fourth year prodoctoral DMD student
Application Procedures
- Complete the Willamette Dental Foundation Scholarship Application and supporting documentation by Friday, February 22, 2013
- Include an official or unofficial copy of your dental school transcript
- Attach a typed essay of no more than 2 pages (double-spaced) that addresses the following topics. The essay is given strong consideration in the decision making process.

- Describe your understanding of fee for service reimbursement versus capitation financing of dental care.
- What are your thoughts about cosmetic practice and group practice dentistry?
- What motivated you to choose dentistry as your career?
- Identify your career goals and needs clearly by including information about your dental education and future employment interests.
Hawaii Dental Students Endowed Scholarship
The OHSU School of Dentistry announces the Hawaii Dental Students Endowed Scholarship, a donor-funded scholarship for OHSU predoctoral students who are residents of the state of Hawaii.
The Hawaii Dental Students Endowed Scholarship was created by five Hawaiian OHSU alumni. All five of the initial donors are proud graduates of the OHSU School of Dentistry. Their desires to give back to their alma mater and pave the way for future dental professionals from Hawaii demonstrate their passion and commitment to education and their community.
Two $2,300 scholarships funded by the Hawaii Dental Students Scholarship Endowment Fund will be awarded in the 2012-13 academic year to two predoctoral students at the OHSU School of Dentistry based on the following criteria: 1) career plans; 2) potential as a dentist; 3) financial need; 4) academic achievement and scholastic record while a student at OHSU.

Yui Sing "Dany" and Debbie Tse Scholarship
The OHSU School of Dentistry announces the Yui Sing "Dany" and Debbie Tse Scholarship, a donor-funded scholarship for OHSU predoctoral DS3 students.
This $10,000 scholarship is made possible by the thoughtfulness and generosity of two Oregon Health & Science University alumni, Dr. Yui Sing "Dany" Tse and his wife Debbie. Both Dany and Debbie were born in China and immigrated to the United States. Dany earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Portland State University in 1978 and graduated from the OHSU School of Dentistry with a Doctor of Dental Medicine degree in 1979. Debbie was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in Dental Hygiene from OHSU in 1977.
The Tse scholarship will be awarded to a third-year OHSU dental student who intends to practice general dentistry and exhibits an exemplary commitment to dental excellence and professionalism as demonstrated through clinical proficiency, academic achievements and community involvement. The Scholarship Committee in consultation with clinical department chairs will select the recipient of this scholarship.

- Must be a currently enrolled OHSU predoctoral DS3 student
- Preference is given to those who intend to practice general dentistry
Award Amount
- $10,000 awarded in the spring academic term applied against tuition and fees

- Must include a Biographical sketch of not more than one page.
Melissa Mariman, D.M.D., Endowed Memorial Scholarship
The OHSU School of Dentistry announces the Melissa Mariman, D.M.D., Endowed Memorial Scholarship, a donor-funded scholarship for OHSU predoctoral students in the third quarter of their fourth year in the dental school curriculum.
Dr. Mariman graduated from the OHSU School of Dentistry in 1999. After graduation, she accepted a position at the Bellingham Dental Clinic working mainly with underprivileged children. Through her work at the clinic, Dr. Mariman learned about the need for more anesthesiologists in the area and applied to and was accepted to Loma Linda Medical Center. She completed the program in February 2004 and returned to Washington to resume her career. Within months of returning to Washington, Dr. Mariman learned she had brain cancer. This scholarship is intended to be a living tribute to Dr. Mariman while benefiting students at the OHSU School of Dentistry.
The recipient of the Melissa Mariman, D.M.D., Endowed Memorial Scholarship will be the student who best exemplifies the characteristics of Dr. Mariman: a caring individual who shows compassion for not only the patients but classmates, someone who is diligent in their academic career, and someone who is a hard worker. There is no academic minimum GPA associated with this scholarship.
