Cysts of the Head, Neck, and Oral Cavity - Jim Kratochvil, DDS

Cysts are common forms of pathology that dental professionals often face. Common categories of cysts that occur in the head and neck are non-odontogenic developmental cysts and odontogenic cysts. Concepts of development, clinical and radiographic presentation, microscopic features, and natural history of these various cysts will be presented.

At the completion of the course, participants should be able to:

• Understand the development of different head, neck, and oral cysts

• Recognize the clinical and/or radiographic presentation of these cysts

• Have a rudimentary understanding of distinctive microscopic features of some cysts

• Recognize possible associations and concerns of certain cysts

• Have a basic understanding of management of various head, neck, and oral cysts

 

Early Detection of Oral Cancer - Cindy Kleinegger, DDS, MS

Early detection continues to be the most significant factor effecting survival rate among people with oropharyngeal cancer. This course will discuss early detection of oropharyngeal cancer including identification of risk factors for the disease. The steps involved in performing an effective oral cancer screening examination will be reviewed and various diagnostic aides marketed for the detection of oral cancer will be addressed. Clinical cases will illustrate soft tissue abnormalities that should raise suspicion for oral cancer or pre-cancer and guidelines for when and how suspicious lesions should be biopsied will be presented.

At the completion of the course, participants should be able to:

• identify risk factors for oropharyngeal cancer.

• perform an effective oral cancer screening examination.

• identify soft tissue abnormalities suspicious for oral cancer or pre-cancer.

• understand how the quality of a biopsy specimen effects the accuracy of the microscopic diagnosis.

Speakers:  F. James Kratochvil, DDS is an associate professor at Oregon Health & Science University, School of Dentistry, where he is Chair of the Department of Pathology and Radiology.  He is also on the faculty of the School of Medicine in the Department of Pathology.  He is the director of the OHSU Oral Pathology Biopsy Service and has a practice seeing clinical patients.  Jim graduated from Georgetown University School of Dentistry in 1976.  Following a general practice residency at the Naval Medical Center at San Diego, he served three years as a general dentist, first on an aircraft carrier and then at a dental clinic at Yokosuka, Japan.  He completed an oral pathology residency at Emory University and an additional year of anatomic pathology training at the National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, Maryland.  He has twice been assigned as a staff pathologist at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, Washington, DC, and three times at the Naval Dental School, Bethesda, Maryland where he was Chair of the Oral Pathology Department and director of the oral pathology residency program.  He retired from the Navy in 1995.  Jim has been a Fellow of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology since 1982 and a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology since 1985.  Presently he is a Site Visitor for the American Dental Association's Commission of Dental Accreditation and he is a Director of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology.  He has authored numerous papers and several book chapters in a variety of medical and dental publications.

Cindy Kleinegger, DDS, MS
is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology and Radiology at the Oregon Health & Science University School of Dentistry. She practices both in the Oral Pathology Biopsy Service and in the Faculty Dental Practice managing patients with mucosal diseases, non-odontogenic pain and salivary gland dysfunction. Dr. Kleinegger earned her DDS degree from the University of Colorado in 1990.  She then completed a one-year General Practice Residency at the Veteran's Administration Medical Center in Denver, Colorado and became a Fellow in the American Association of Hospital Dentists.  Prior to pursuing specialty training, she associated in a general dental practice and was Clinical Instructor in the Department of Oral Diagnostic Sciences at the University of Colorado School of Dentistry.  In 1995 Dr. Kleinegger completed the Advanced Education Program in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and a Masters of Science degree in Stomatology at the University of Iowa and became a Fellow of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology.  After one year on the faculty of the University of Mississippi School of Dentistry, she returned to the University of Iowa where she was on the faculty for nine years.  During this time she became a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and Director of the Advanced Education Program in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology.
