Digital Dental Photography

This hands-on course is designed for dentists, hygienists, and dental assistants. Participants will work along with the instructor to learn the skills needed to take usable intra-oral images.
Digital photography is an extremely valuable tool for practicing dentists, auxiliaries, and dental educators. By using digital imaging, we can communicate with patients, labs, insurance companies, and our peers faster and easier than ever before.
This course is intended to address common questions regarding digital dental photography:
• What basic equipment do I need to do intra-oral dental photography?
• What are the common views and how do I capture them?
• What do I do with the pictures after I've take them?
• How do I download them to my computer and can I easily manipulate them?
Course Objectives:
• Acquaint the novice dental photographer with the techniques required for excellent dental views
• Give the clinician an introduction to basic techniques to download and easily manipulate the images
• Demonstrate the importance and provide strategies to incorporate digital imaging into your practice and/or presentations
Morning Session
• Introduction to digital photography (film vs. digital)
• Armamentarium - What you need for digital dental photography
• The "Views" - How to maximize the view according to the clinical situation, and achieve photographs meeting the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry's requirements for photo submissions
• "Now What?" - After you've taken the pictures how do you use them? (focusing on easy downloading to your • computer, and easy tools for picture manipulation)
Afternoon Session
• "Hands-On" - Participants will pair-up and take clinical pictures of each other, while focusing on the AACD's requirements. The lab session will allow the participant first-hand exposure and experience to digital dental equipment. After practicing the techniques taught in the morning session, participants will practice taking intra- and extra-oral images on each other. By using a laptop computer and an LCD projector, participants will see the results of their work and how easily imaging can be incorporated into clinical practice.
• Review and Critique - Each pair will present their photos to the group. We will then discuss the photos, ask questions, and critique the captured views.

Tuition: $445 per participant

Required Lab Equipment:
Please bring mirrors, retractors, and a rubber mixing bowl (for warm water to heat the mirrors). If you have a digital camera capable of intra-oral, macro photography that you would like to practice with, please feel free to bring it along. Please make sure that it is in good working condition (charged batteries, memory cards, etc). Instructor: Jason H. Goodchild, DMD has been teaching digital dental photography to dentists and dental students for many years at both the New Jersey Dental School and the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. He has contributed photographs to many journal articles and was responsible for teaching photography and case presentation to dental students at the New Jersey Dental School.
Currently, Dr. Goodchild is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Diagnostic Sciences at the New Jersey Dental School and a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Oral Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. He is also in private practice in Havertown, PA. Dr. Goodchild has been an invited speaker for the Academy of General Dentistry and American Association for Dental Examiners. He is a reviewer for the Journal of the American Dental Association, General Dentistry, and Quintessence International, and has also served as a grant reviewer for the National Institute of Health.
