Dental Materials
Critical Assessment of the Current Status of Dental Materials
with Jack L. Ferracane, MS, PhD
on Saturday, November 12, 2011
The art of using natural and synthetic materials to restore or replace teeth has existed for more than two thousand years. However, some of the most significant advances in the development and use of dental materials have occurred within the past few decades. Inventions are being brought to market at a frenetic pace, one that seems unlikely to slow in the near future. This course will provide a historical perspective followed by an update on the current status of many of the essential dental materials, with specific focus on composites, adhesives, glass ionomers, cements, ceramics, and others. A look at the horizon will provide a perspective on the development of new agents, such as "smart" materials and tissue engineering, and their potential roles in dentistry. The role of an evidence-based approach to dental materials use and selection will be emphasized throughout. The concept of practice-based research for evaluating dental materials and dental problems will be discussed.
OBJECTIVES:
1. Explain the concept of state of the art and distinguish it from standard of care.
2. Describe the historical development of dental materials.
3. Explain the importance and limitations of evidence based selection and use of materials in modern dental practice.
4. Identify the current state of the art of various types of dental materials, including composites, adhesives, glass ionomers, cements, ceramics, and others.
5. Discuss how to distinguish levels of evidence and incorporate this information into choosing and using dental materials.
6. Describe the role of practice-based research in generating clinical evidence for dental materials use in dental practice.
7. Explain the indications and contraindications of specific materials based on their composition and physical properties.
8. Describe new areas of research for the development of exciting new dental materials.

Presenter: Jack L. Ferracane's current position is Professor and Chair of Restorative Dentistry, and Division Director of Biomaterials and Biomechanics at Oregon Health & Science University. Dr. Ferracane received a BS in Biology from the University of Illinois, and an MS and PhD. in Biological Materials from Northwestern University. He is a founding fellow and past-President of the Academy of Dental Materials. He is a past-President of the Dental Materials Group of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR). He is the recipient of the IADR Distinguished Scientist award for dental materials research, the Wilmer Souder award. He serves on the editorial board of ten journals, and is Associate Editor of the Journal of Dental Research, as well as Odontology. He has authored a textbook entitled "Materials in Dentistry. Principles and Applications," now in its second edition. He has published and lectured extensively on dental materials, including dental composites, adhesives and dental amalgam. His current research interests are in dental composites and the use of bioactive glasses in resin-based dental materials. He also is actively involved in the establishment of networks designed to conduct clinical research in the private practice setting. His research is funded by the NIH/NIDCR as well as private industry. He has provided continuing education at annual meetings of the ADA, Academy of Operative Dentistry, Academy of Restorative Dentistry, British Dental Association, California Dental Association, Chicago Midwinter, Midwest Dental Conference, Oregon Dental Conference, Pacific NW Dental Conference, Southwest Dental Conference, Yankee Dental Congress, and to other professional dental organizations.
