Medical Emergencies Update - 2009 DVD
Medical Emergencies occur in dental offices on a daily basis. Dentists and their staffs have an ethical and medicolegal obligation to be able to recognize and appropriately respond to these emergencies. This course will review the prevention, diagnosis and management of common medical emergencies in the dental office. Course content is appropriate for the entire dental team and fulfills the Oregon Board of Dentistry's relicensure requirements for medical emergencies and anesthesia permits.
Objectives:
Be able to determine what emergency equipment is appropriate for your office to have available for the management of medical emergencies.
Develop a knowledge base within the entire dental team to allow them to develop an emergency response plan appropriate for their office
Be able to review the medical history and recognize which patients are at risk to develop specific medical emergencies
Understand the signs and symptoms of common medical emergencies and develop a rational approach to their management in the dental setting.

Speaker: Steven W. Beadnell, DMD graduated from Oregon Health & Science University, School of Dentistry in 1980. He completed a general practice residency upon his graduation and then completed his oral & maxillofacial surgery training at David Grant USAF Medical Center. He has been in private practice in Portland since 1991 and is Adjunct Associate Professor at OHSU in the Department of Oral Maxillofacial Surgery.
Dental Analgesics: From Theory to Therapeutics - 2006 CD
This course is intended to provide dental health care providers with a succinct review of the latest information on the pharmacology of opioid and nonopioid analgesics with the emphasis on the practical application of these principles to everyday clinical situations. Successful completion of this course will give the viewer the background to assess new analgesics for possible inclusion into their drug armamentarium. PowerPoint Presentation revised 8/2006.

Sedation in the Dental Office & Medical Emergencies - 2007 - DVD

Speaker: Kenneth L. Reed, DMD - After completing college at the University of Arizona, Dr. Reed attended dental school at the Oregon Health Sciences University (OHSU) School of Dentistry in Portland, Oregon, earning the DMD degree. As a fourth year dental student, he began working toward a Master's Degree in Pharmacology. After completing dental school, Dr. Reed remained at OHSU where he continued to work toward the Master's Degree, received advanced training in anesthesia and also completed a residency in periodontology.
Dr. Reed is a member of the Board of Directors of the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology (ADSA) and holds Fellowships in both the ADSA and Academy of General Dentistry (AGD). Dr. Reed is a Diplomate of the National Dental Board of Anesthesiology. His involvement in the ADSA continues as the Assistant Editor of Anesthesia Progress as well as serving on the Editorial Review Board of that journal.
Dr. Reed is a journal reviewer for General Dentistry, the journal of the AGD and Special Care in Dentistry, the journal of the Special Care Dentistry Association. He also serves on the Scientific Advisory Panel for the Journal of Endodontics. Dr. Reed is Chair of the Committee on Examinations of the ADSA as well as chair the Continuing Education Committee. He also chairs the American Dental Association's Standards Committee Working Group 4.32 on Syringes, Cartridges and Needles. As an author, Dr. Reed has written five textbook chapters, all in Sedation: A Guide to Patient Management. Two chapters were in the 4th ed. The first was entitled "The Physically Compromised Patient" and the second, "Neurologic Illnesses and Other Conditions." Three chapters were in the 5th edition of the same text, "The Physically Compromised Patient," "Neurologic Illnesses and Other Conditions" and "The Geriatric Patient." He has further contributed to the professional literature by publishing numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals. In what little free time he has, Dr. Reed enjoys being a flight instructor.
There is Pharmacology in the Air: Nitrous Oxide Use in Dentistry - 2008 DVD
This course is targeted for dentists and dental hygienists who are licensed to administer N2O. Dr. Smith will review important pharmacological and therapeutic aspects of nitrous oxide use in the dental office. He will also offer insights into federal and state regulations that apply to the dental use of nitrous oxide as well as the question of health effects associated with long term exposure to trace concentrations of nitrous oxide in office air. This course can be applied toward Oregon Board of Dentistry requirements for continuing education to maintain a Class I permit. Taped 7/11/08

Speaker: John R. Smith, PhD, is Professor of Pharmacology in the Department of Integrative Biosciences at the OHSU School of Dentistry. Dr. Smith received his MS and PhD in pharmacology/toxicology from Oregon State University and completed a post-doctoral fellowship in pharmacology at the University of Washington. In 1982, he joined the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the OHSU School of Dentistry. He is currently the course director for all pharmacology classes offered to dental resident students and undergraduate dental students at OHSU-SD.
Regulation of Dental Hygiene Practice in Oregon - 2009 DVD
This course will provide an overview of professional regulation & credentialing for dental hygienists with an emphasis on the process for pursuing regulatory change. Recent regulatory changes which affect dental hygiene practice in Oregon will be discussed including the limited access permit (LAP) and the restorative functions endorsement (RFE). Topics will include:

Speaker: Lisa J. Rowley, CDA, RDH, MS is the Program Director for the School of Dental Health Science at Pacific University. She has worked in dental hygiene education for over 25 years in both faculty and administrative positions. She has an AAS, BS and MS degree in dental hygiene and a second MS degree in organizational management. She is an active member of the American Dental Hygienists' Association and the American Dental Education Association. She serves as a consultant to the Government Relations Council for the Oregon Dental Hygienists' Association.
