Sedation Medical Emergencies Review - 2010 - DVD
Presenters: Ken Reed, DMD & Stan Malamed, DDS
This program will review aspects related to patient comfort as well as a brief review of medical emergencies. We will start with a discussion of the physical evaluation of the patient. This will allow us to determine which patient are appropriate for sedation as well as allow us to prevent most medical emergencies. After patent evaluation has been completed, a sedation plan will be formulated and discussed. This sedation plan will be based on the ASA physical status of the patient and the procedure including invasiveness and anticipated duration.
Once we have the basics, patient and procedure identified, the choice of sedation technique and agent will be determined. A discussion of various sedation techniques and the pharmacology of available agents will follow. This will allow us to now match patient, procedure and drug. Based on our decisions thus far, our next task is a determination of appropriate patient monitoring for the planned case. The final session of the day's program will be a review of the most common medical emergencies seen in dental offices including prevention, recognition and treatment. Clinical videos will be presented to illustrate concepts discussed and evidence based medicine will be referred to throughout the presentation.
Course Objectives - After completing this course the participants will
• Understand the importance of a complete physical evaluation
• Be able to formulate a sedation plan - e.g. technique (oral, inhalation, iv)
• Determine the proper sedation agent
