About
As human beings, we experience and interact with the world through our brains. Advancing our understanding of how the brain functions and how genes and the environment influence the brain in health and disease is central to the lives of all people. OHSU is a national leader in neurosciences clinical care and research. There are more than 400 clinicians and researchers at OHSU who care for people afflicted with diseases of the brain, educate the next generation of neurosciences clinicians and researchers, and conduct the full gamut of bench-to-bedside research. Research funding for neurosciences is the leading area for funded research at OHSU and clinical neurosciences is a major area of emphasis. The OHSU Brain Institute is building upon this incredible base to transform OHSU into an internationally recognized neurosciences research center.
Vision
By 2012, the OHSU Brain Institute will be recognized as a world leader in pioneering brain research and the effective clinical application of that research. The Institute will foster cutting-edge translational research, scholarship and patient care and will be a catalyst for infusing neuroscience across medical disciplines and throughout the training of new medical professionals at OHSU.
In addition, the OHSU Brain Institute will use the neurosciences as a vehicle to dramatically increase public understanding of the brain, its central role in defining who we are as humans, and the dynamic interface between science, environment and quality of life.
The Institute will provide all Oregonians with powerful, relevant evidence of the value of their investments in OHSU by leading the charge for statewide neuroscience public interest, access and benefits. In doing so, the OHSU Brain Institute will exemplify the tremendous return on investment that Oregonians can expect from OHSU.
Mission
To advance and understand the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of nervous system diseases by promoting interdisciplinary research in basic and clinical neurosciences.
Goals
- Address the neuroscience needs of Oregonians by fostering integration of care for patients with neurological and psychiatric illnesses.
- Accelerate implementation of new discoveries to application and patient benefit by fostering the translation of basic research to the bedside and to the community.
- Integrate the entire OHSU neuroscience community by enhancing communication and creating a stronger sense of community among OHSU basic and clinical neuroscientists.
- Enhance the reputation of OHSU nationally and internationally as a center of excellence for neuroscience research and clinical care by leveraging OHSU’s commitment to excellence in public outreach.
- Enrich the educational experience of graduate students, medical students, residents and post-doctoral fellows interested in the neurosciences by providing new and creative opportunities for learning, participating and collaborating.
- Build awareness of, and support for, the neurosciences by providing an organization to advocate for the neurosciences within OHSU and outside OHSU.
