Issues in Scholarly Communication
12/2/2010 - Print Journal Cancellations and Exorbitant Price Increases
The OHSU Library has cancelled its subscription to hard copies of several journals (listed below) for the next fiscal year. Library users will continue to be able to access these cancelled journals electronically, as the library has retained its electronic subscriptions to these journals.
The decision to cancel the hard copy subscription to these journals comes after a lengthy negotiation process with Lippincott Williams & Wilkins (LWW) the journal publisher. LWW asked the OHSU Library to absorb a 30% price increase for its Total Access Package, a package of electronic journals. Due to this price increase the library was forced to cancel hard copy subscriptions.
Many OHSU faculty members serve on editorial boards for the cancelled journals and other journals published by LWW. The OHSU Library has requested support from these faculty members to communicate with their editorial boards and with LWW that such price increases and closed pricing practices are untenable.
