Data Curation Team
Melissa Haendel, PhD, Lead Data Curator. She received her PhD in Neuroscience from the University of Wisconsin and has done research in molecular developmental neuroscience using zebrafish as a model system. She joins us from the Zebrafish Information Network (ZFIN) where she has been building an anatomy ontology and developing strategies to make anatomy and phenotype ontologies interoperable across databases and species, primarily for the purpose of mining model organism data for phenotypes similar to human disease.

Melanie Wilson, MS, Scientific Data Curator. She received her Master of Science in Library Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a National Library of Medicine Postgraduate Fellowship in Medical Informatics at OHSU. For eight years, she was the Manager of Indexing Services for WebMD, where developed content indexing rules with stakeholders, participated in development of indexing software and unit record metadata, collaborated with the WebMD ontology development group and supervised the indexing team.

Carlo Torniai, PhD, Scientific Data Curator. He received a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Florence in Italy. His research has been in the areas of web technologies and the semantic web. He has been working on designing ontologies in a wide range of domains including multimedia, e-learning and geospatial mapping. He joins us from the Integrated Asset Management Project at the University of Southern California.

Erik Segerdell, BS, Data Curator. He joins us from Xenbase at the University of Calgary, where his tasks included annotatingXenopus gene expression data, coordinating genetic nomenclature, and building an anatomy ontology, as well as contributing to the development and testing of curation, query and display interfaces. He previously had a similar role for eight years at ZFIN, the zebrafish model organism database.
Three additional Scientific Data Curators will be hired at Harvard University.
OHSU Site Team
Petra Jakobs, PhD, Resource Navigator. She received a doctoral degree in biology magna cum laude from JLU Giessen in Germany and has been working at OHSU since 1992. Her research interests are in the areas of genomics and mechanisms of disease in cancer and cardiovascular systems. Most recently, she has been a Senior Research Associate in the Department of Molecular & Medical Genetics.

Mikyung Han, PhD, Resource Navigator. She received her PhD in Biophysics/Biochemistry from Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) and MS from The University of Texas at Austin focusing on Medicinal Chemistry. She performed her postdoctoral research at the National Center for Macromolecular Imaging at BCM. She worked as a research assistant and lab manager at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Merck Pharmaceutical Co. and The University of Texas at Austin.

AiLien Truong, BS, Data Entry Technologist. AiLien is a student in the OHSU Department of Medical Informatics and Clinical Epidemiology and expects to receive a Biomedical Informatics Graduate Certificate in Spring, 2010. She has been working as a Research Assistant / Study Coordinator in the Division of Vascular Surgery and volunteers in several research units at OHSU.

Charlene Voorhees, MS, Data Entry Technologist (half time). Charlene just received her Masters of Science in Behavioral Neuroscience from OHSU, where she has been working as a Graduate Research Assistant. Her research interests relate to the extinction of ethanol conditioned place preference and ethanol seeking behaviors.
