How You Can Help

Holding Hands

Health care that is compassionate and respectful is both more humane and more effective. These qualities are at the core of the healing relationship, and are more important now than ever.

With your help, the Center for Ethics in Health Care can expand its mission to transform the landscape of health care through the growth of its current major initiatives:

  • Program in Compassionate Communication, directed by the Doris and Mark Storms Chair, to innovate training in the vital skills of compassionate communication for students and practicing professionals in all aspects of health care throughout the state. Learn more: Program in Compassionate Communication

  • The Ronald W. Naito Directorship in Serious Illness Education Endowment Fund, responds to the unique needs for more advanced communication skills training for health care professionals caring for patients with serious illness. Learn more: Serious Illness Education

  • The Educate Future Health Care Ethics Leaders Endowment Fund, is to support in perpetuity, a program that continually enhances the professional knowledge and skills of current and future health care ethics leaders in our state and region.

  • POLST (Portable Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment), to ensure that a patient’s wishes for care near the end of life are recorded as medical orders and thus honored and respected in a crisis. Learn more: POLST: When is the Right Time?

Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of our supporters, the work of the Center for Ethics is 96% funded through philanthropy. This allows the Center to maintain a strong independent voice in its work to ensure compassionate and ethical health care for all Oregonians.
