“Diversity that is at the core of our university’s principles allows all people to have the opportunity to thrive.”

Norm Kalbfleisch, M.D.
Associate Professor
Emergency Medicine

Norm grew up in Montana, and received his B.S. in Zoology and Botany and a secondary education license from Montana State University. Before entering medical school, he taught high school science at a school near the Gros Ventre and Assiniboine reservation and was Program Coordinator for Emergency Medical Services for the Montana Department of Health. He completed his emergency medicine residency at OHSU and subsequently joined the faculty, which he has been a part of for 21 years. For 15 years, Norm served as an assistant residency director and now manages the Clinical Research Investigative Studies Program (CRISP). He also coordinates training for medical students in a course called Sexual Orientation Issues in Health Care. His research interests include vulnerable populations, GLBT issues, global health and geriatric emergency care. Dr Kalbfleisch received the Torchbearer Award from the Equity Foundation in early spring, 2008 for his work on educating OHSU medical students on GLBT heath care issues.

Diversity is important to Norm because it allows all people to have the opportunity to thrive. He appreciates the support for diversity that he has found within OHSU and the school of medicine, saying that, “as an advocate for GLBT patients and employees at OHSU, I am proud of the university’s commitment to GLBT health care and employment issues.”
