Meet Laura Villasana
“As a graduate student at OHSU I am obtaining the training I need to help me become a successful scientist.”
Laura Villasana
Third Year Graduate Student
Behavioral Neuroscience
Laura came to OHSU from her hometown of Houston, TX, where she received a B.S. in Biology from the University of Houston. At OHSU, Laura examines the effects radiation exposure has on the cognitive function of mice. Her research focuses on how differences such as sex and genotype may affect susceptibility to radiation, and how this information can be used to help humans that have been exposed to radiation.
Laura enjoys her graduate training at OHSU because of the collaborative and interdisciplinary atmosphere. Working with the diverse population at OHSU appeals to Laura because, “It’s nice to know you have common experiences with your peers, and that is often found in a diverse environment.” She has also found opportunities at OHSU to exercise her interest in science advocacy and works with some of her colleagues to encourage people to explore science-related careers.
