Meet Jacob Morrow
“Students are constantly contributing examples from their life experiences to the ongoing academic conversation. Sharing and taking ownership in our collective experiences will ultimately help us to appreciate our differences, making us stronger clinicians who are better able to solve problems.”
Jacob R. Morrow, M.P.H.
Second Year Dental Student
School of Dentistry
Jacob grew up in Billings, MT and Mesa, AZ. After earning his B.S. in Microbiology at Northern Arizona University, he went on to earn his Masters of Public Health at the University of Arizona. While in graduate school he worked as an interviewer and research technician for a GLBT youth program focused on substance abuse prevention and treatment. He also worked as an intern and program evaluator for a mobile oral health program and went on to write his thesis on this experience. As a student at OHSU, Jacob has taken an active role in many academic organizations, including: Delta Sigma Delta dental fraternity, the American Student Dental Association and the American Dental Education Association.
Jacob matriculated at OHSU with the goal of becoming a culturally competent dentist, and he has found that the diversity of the university’s faculty and student body is helping him reach that goal by encouraging him to look at issues from new perspectives. He believes one of the greatest benefits of working and studying in a diverse environment is the exposure to people with traits, beliefs, interests, and ideas that might be different from one’s own, saying, “Diversity helps people to step outside of their comfort zone and understand situations from a different point of view. This is an especially important concept for future dentists and other medical providers, as we will be treating and extremely diverse patient population.”
