2017 CURE Intern: Gabriela Hernandez Duran
Gabriela Hernandez Duran
Liberty High School
Mentor: Güllü Topal Görgün, Ph.D.
Gabriela Hernandez Duran has a deep interest in the medical field, both in providing patient care and in conducting research. As the first member of her family to attend college, she plans to combine those passions by pursuing a career as a research nurse. Her two years in the CURE program have been a tremendous head start on that career path.
A recent graduate of Liberty High School, she managed to maintain a perfect 4.0 GPA during her high school career, with a course load that included multiple advanced and AP courses. She was a four year member of the Liberty Belles dance team and despite coming in her freshman year as a novice dancer, through hard work and dedication she finished her senior year as the captain. This past year she helped to found and served as co-president of the new HOSA (Future Healthcare Professionals) club at her school.
In addition to her academic achievements, Gabriela has extensive volunteer experience. She has volunteered at the Oregon Food Bank, Hillsboro Parks and Recreation, local elementary schools, and at Tuality Community Hospital. She also served as a youth representative on the "Hillsboro Empowers Youth" board. Gabriela will be attending University of Portland in the fall, double majoring in nursing and biology, with a minor in Spanish.
Gabriela is a second year participant in CURE, returning to the lab of Güllü Topal Görgün, Ph.D. Her research topicin 2017 is "Targeted Checkpoint Inhibition in Combination with HDAC Inhibition and Pomalidomide on Multiple Myeloma Cells".
