2017 CURE Intern: DeAuj’Zhane Coley
Jefferson High School
Mentor: Bill Chang, M.D., Ph.D.
DeAuj'Zhane Coley is returning for her third summer in the CURE program at OHSU. Her interest in healthcare began at an early age, when her younger brother had a medical related incident. The sense of helplessness she felt at that moment inspired her goal of becoming a pediatrician.
As a recent graduate of Jefferson High School, DeAuj'Zhane took college courses at Portland Community College through the Middle College for Advanced Studies program. This program allowed her to take high level classes within Jefferson, and at the PCC campus. The classes included, among others, medical terminology and college writing. DeAuj'Zhane excels in school, maintaining a 3.9 GPA.
DeAuj'Zhane is a very hard-working and motivated student, and she has brought these traits to activities outside of academics. She has been an active member of student government at Jefferson, as well as serving as the president the Jefferson Christian Students United club, and as captain of the cheerleading team. Outside of school, she participated in the Youth Leadership Committee through Planned Parenthood, working with other high school students to enhance health education in their schools. In the fall of 2017, DeAuj'Zhane will attend Howard University in Washington, D.C.
In the CURE program in 2015, DeAuj'Zhane interned in the lab of GauravSahay, Ph.D., and in 2016 in the lab of Rosalie Sears, Ph.D. In 2017 she is interning in the lab of Bill Chang, M.D., Ph.D. Her research topic is "Aurora A Kinase Inhibition to Overcome Vincristine Resistance in Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia".
