Health and Science Career Conference
Each year, the Center for Diversity & Inclusion collaborates with the Schools of Dentistry, Medicine, and Nursing and the College of Pharmacy to host a one-day conference for high school and college students interested in pursuing a career in the health care and science professions.
Thanks to everyone who joined us for the 2014 Career Conference, held Feb. 21. We will start planning for next year's event this fall, and registration will open in December. Hope to see you next year.

The conference seeks to:
- Encourage diverse students to study health and sciences
- Provide students with insight on health care and science professions in medicine, nursing, dentistry, allied health, engineering, biomedical informatics, dietetics & nutrition and pharmacy,
- Offer tips on admission processes and other relevant information,
- Introduce students to OHSU educational programs, faculty, facilities and resources, and
- Promote bicultural/bilingual prospective health and science providers.
In addition to presentations, breakout sessions and an information fair, students also had an opportunity to visit visit campus facilities, through the following tours:
Nursing Simulation Center: An opportunity to see classrooms, the computer lab, and see how the faculty and students use high fidelity mannequins to practice clinical skills in a safe, innovative and meaningful experiential learning experience.
Pharmacy Tour: The Pharm.D. Simulation consists of mini-puzzles that incorporate the daily duties and tasks of a pharmacist. These puzzles include common problems that pharmacists typically handle; each puzzle will include various pathways which lead to additional strategic questions that must also be solved by the participant. Once the journey is finished, the presenters will conduct a short recap discussing what would have happened if a pharmacist had not been involved.
Department of Biomedical Engineering: The tour of labs in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, located in the Center for Health & Healing, will include labs doing research on: nanobiotechnology; vascular systems (clotting disorders and tissue engineering); biomedical optics; and unobtrusive technology for assessment of cognitive and motor functions of patients in their home environment.
OHSU Knight Cancer Institute: Radiation Oncology is a highly specialized branch of medicine that utilizes ionizing radiation in the treatment of disease. Various health care opportunities are available in this field, such as MDs, therapists, social workers, nurses, and physicians to assist patients and the treatment of cancer. Meet with staff and view some of the equipment used for treatment.
Department of Emergency Medicine: OHSU provides world-class educational opportunities for tomorrow's emergency healthcare professionals, and promotes lifelong learning and instills in its students a commitment to serving the communities where they live and work. Tour the OHSU emergency department and meet with doctors and other health providers.
VirtuOHSU Surgical Simulation Center: An opportunity to see the skills lab, meet current surgery residents, learn about what it takes to become a surgeon, and experience some hands-on training in fundamental surgical skills; suturing & laparoscopic with mentoring from volunteer surgical residents and current OHSU medical students.
Outpatient Rehabilitation: Visit the Center of Health and Healing Outpatient Rehabilitation Clinic and engage in experiential learning activities with physical therapists. Clinician specialties of this Clinic include sports, spine, neurologic, oncology, and specialty therapies. Participants will learn about professional disciplines of rehabilitation including physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech language pathology, athletic training and exercise physiology.
Advanced Imaging Research Center Lab Tour: State of the art imaging equipment used to collect structural and functional images of various anatomical structures. With advanced imaging, researchers can study abnormal patterns of development.
ADHD & Attention Research Lab: Various psychological assessment tools used by the OHSU Department of Psychiatry. This laboratory's work is overseen by a licensed neuropsychologist and licensed clinical social worker.
