Using Digital Images

The imagery that you use can convey a lot of information about your site. If you are looking for images for your site, there are a number of resources around OHSU campus:

Stock Photo Resources

  • OHSU Medical Photography/The Digital Zone: An in-house photography resources that has a large collection of images that can be browsed through and purchased. They are located in the basement of Baird Hall, BH06 and can be reached at 503-494-8040.
  • Digital Resource Library: Faculty, staff, and students of OHSU can use this collection free for use for non-profit educational purposes.
  • CommonSpot Public Gallery: CommonSpot has an embedded gallery of uploaded images, sized and optimized for the web free to use. When you go to add a photo, choose the "Gallery" option to browse. There are two primary catagories, based on size: 120px and 250px. For more information, view our training video.

Editing Digital Images

For a basic overview of digital images and their use on the web, read the materials from our recent Open Web Lab: Graphics and Images on the Web.

When editing images for the web, try to keep the file size below 50KB so they download wuickly and don't slow the loading time for the page. CommonSpot has a file upload limit of 500KB for all images - you will not be able to upload anything larger to the file system.

You will also want to limit the pixel dimensions of your image. An image wider than 560 will appear to run off the screen or get truncated. When using an image with text, it is recommended not to go any wider than 250 pixels.

In order to optimize your images for the web, you will need to use a digital photo editor. There are a number of different options. Here are some of the more common ones at OHSU, of varying price. This software is often available at a discounted educational price. Also, a camera or scanner will often have free software that comes with it - you might already have software and not realize it.
