Old Library: Historical Collections and Archives
A closed stacks facility, the Old Library, located in the OHSU Auditorium building, houses several unique book, photographic and medical collections open to OHSU and the public. Its mission is to collect, organize, preserve and make accessible published and unpublished records pertaining to the history of OHSU and the history of the health sciences.
The collections include:
The History of Medicine Collection
Begun in 1893, this collection of nearly 3,000 volumes includes such rare classics as the 1555 edition of Vesalius’ De humani corporis fabrica.
History of Dentistry Collection
This collection of 560 rare and historic books on the history of dentistry is the only one of its kind in the Pacific Northwest. Archive Collection
In addition to these historically valuable collections, OHSU’s library also contains archive collections of donated materials germane to OHSU, individuals and the health sciences in general.
Oral History Project
Begun in 1997, the Oral History Project is a collection of more than 90 audiotapes of recordings with individuals uniquely connected to key events and people in the history of OHSU.
Medical Museum Collection
This eclectic collection of medical artifacts includes the largest assemblage of WWII Japanese medical instruments, as well as a variety of doctors’ bags, pathological specimens, surgical instruments, drug kits through the ages, and more.
