Career Development Discussion: Tips for Employees and Managers

The career development discussion is the key step in OHSU's IDP process.The purpose of this meeting is to discuss "Part 1: Employee Worksheet", explore possibilities for aligning employee career aspirations with OHSU business needs, and together complete "Part 2: Completing the IDP" to document a mutually-agreeable plan for the employee's development for the upcoming year.

  • Be Prepared: Review Employee Worksheet, be prepared to provide perspective/insights on employee strengths, skills, interests, and potential career opportunities for employee. Be prepared to discuss the business challenges, trends, and opportunities that might align with the employee's aspirations.
  • Be Prepared: Complete Employee Worksheet and send to your manager ahead of meeting. Review your Employee Worksheet and prepare to discuss your self-assessment insights, strengths, skills, interests, and career aspirations.
  • Listen Actively and Ask Questions: Be inquisitive, avoid jumping to conclusions, evaluate job satisfaction, evoke exploration, use this time to coach.
  • Drive the Discussion: Use your Employee Worksheet as an agenda to guide the meeting. Take a lead role in proactively sharing your self-assessment information and career aspirations.
  • Offer and Request Feedback: Offer support, give honest feedback on employee self-assessment, suggest development activities, provide guidance on potential career paths, share your own relevant professional experiences, connect to resources and networking introductions. Ask for feedback on the career development discussion itself.
