The Career and Workplace Enhancement Center exists to fulfill the mission and vision of the OHSU/AFSCME Labor Management Committee.
We are committed to providing OHSU staff with professional development, training opportunities, and organizational resources to be successful in their current positions or to move to the next level in their career at OHSU.
Benjy Howe, Interim Center Manager, Benjy joined OHSU in February 2011, bringing 10 years of experience in teaching, facilitation, program management, learning and development, organizational development, and leadership development. Benjy holds a Master's degree in Organizational and Human Resource Education from Oregon State University. Benjy loves teaching and supporting others to become better leaders. Benjy has trained and worked with over 2,000 managers. At OHSU, he has led and facilitated 12 Leadership Foundations cohorts and continues to facilitate Director-Level LFP cohorts. In addition, Benjy works on other OHSU strategic leadership development initiatives.
Kelli Byrd, Program and Outreach Coordinator, started working at OHSU in July 2008 as a program coordinator for the department of Service Excellence before moving to the CWE Center in 2009. She coordinates the CWE Center's communication efforts and the English Language Learner program. In her outreach efforts, Kelli hopes that every staff member at OHSU is not only aware, but utilizes, the CWE Center programs and services to enhance their careers and work environments. Kelli received her undergraduate degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and holds an MBA with an emphasis in marketing from Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri. Kelli is a mother of twins.
Rachel Falk, Career Counseling Intern, joined OHSU in September 2015. She is currently completing her master's degree in counseling at Portland State University with a focus on career development and counseling. She has worked the past 8 years as the managing partner of a small marketing agency in Portland, OR. During this time she became interested in organizational structures and the professional development of her team. Rachel has a passion for helping people clarify their strengths and connecting them to meaningful work. She hopes to help the employees of OHSU in achieving their career and life goals. She earned her B.F.A. from New York University. She is a Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® Certified Practitioner and a Strong Interest Inventory® Certified Practitioner. When she is not working or spending time with her family, Rachel enjoys yoga, art exhibits and going to the theater.
Maighie Fitzgerald, Senior Trainer, joined OHSU in September 2011. She facilitates a variety of the CWE Center's general-learning opportunities, including the Emerging Leader Certificate Series. Maighie hopes to provide employees with skills that are practical and applicable in the workplace. Maighie holds an Ed.M. in Organizational and Human Resource Education from Oregon State University and a B.A. in Organizational Communications from the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire. Maighie enjoys exploring Oregon geography, eating tasty food, and relaxing with friends and family.
Mary Lind, Conflict Management Specialist, joined OHSU in December 2012. She offers a three-part Conflict Management Certificate Series and supports a team of professionally trained conflict coaches. Her classes and one-on-one coaching assist employees in addressing the challenges we all face as we work closely with others. Mary has taught and practiced conflict resolution in a variety of government, community and university settings, both locally and internationally. She holds two master's degrees: one in adult learning/conflict resolution from Portland State University; the other in peace education from the United Nations-mandated University for Peace in Costa Rica. She believes that conflict is a normal, inevitable and potentially constructive aspect of human interaction, resulting from differences that both challenge and enrich us. Mary is a fan of dinner parties, live storytelling and reading memoirs. She is also relishing the fun, challenging and deepening aspects of life with a young son.
Christine Lundeen, Career Development Specialist, joined OHSU in September 2014. She provides individual career counseling to AFSCME-represented employees and offers a variety of career development classes with the goal of promoting an environment of career satisfaction and growth at OHSU. Christine enjoys helping people identify their strengths, skills, interests and values and how those translate into a satisfying career path. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and holds a master's degree in counseling from the University of Cincinnati and an undergraduate degree in psychology from Linfield College. Christine also enjoys being involved in leadership with the Oregon Career Development Association and the National Career Development Association. Christine likes to sing and is always up for a night of karaoke.
Alphonse Nwerem, Performance Improvement Specialist, has been with OHSU for more than 15 years. He previously worked as a pharmacy technician. He has a great passion for performance improvement work. Since 2012, he has assisted with various performance improvement projects with HC Quality and Safety Management Department. He has his master's in Health Administration and is certified as a Six Sigma Green Belt in healthcare. Alphonse moved to Portland from Nigeria in 1999. He enjoys dancing, playing soccer, spending time with family and friends, and reading "words of wisdom."
