Meet the Staff
Ken Brown, Comptroller
Mr. Brown joined OHSU in November 2000 as OHSU’s Comptroller. His responsibilities include oversight of the University’s Accounting, Budgeting, Contracting, and Financial Planning operations that support senior level decision making and strategic planning. Prior to Mr. Brown’s employment with OHSU, he was the Senior Operating Officer for Finance for Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, DC. In addition to managing the financial operations, his responsibilities included the development of key service lines and the administration of the Value Analysis Program.
Kerry Bierman, Director of Budget and Financial Planning
Kerry Bierman, Director of Budget and Resource Management, joined OHSU in 2005. She leads the Financial Planning team which focuses on the overall Budget and Financial Planning processes for the University. Her team also develops the Long Term Financial plan which incorporates the objectives and goals of the Vision 2020 Strategic Plan.
Ms. Bierman joined us from Fred Meyer Stores where she worked as the Director of Budgeting and Financial Reporting. Other previous experience includes work in Retail, Banking, Operations and Pension Consulting. Ms. Bierman graduated from the University of California, Davis with a Bachelors degree in Economics. She has 3 children and lives in West Linn where she enjoys photography, gardening, reading and outdoor activities.
Mary Justice, Central Disbursements Senior Manager
Mary Justice, Central Disbursements Senior Manager, joined OHSU in the spring of 2000, bringing 15 years of payroll and medical office experience. She was originally hired to supervise 5.0 FTE payroll office staff but was soon promoted to Payroll Manager, supervising everyone in Payroll except the Accounting staff.
In 2001, Ms. Justice was asked to add the travel desk functions to her responsibilities, where she worked with the travel auditor to streamline procedures for travel authorizations and with OHSU corporate travel agency to offer on-line booking for travel coordinators. In 2005, Ms. Justice was offered another new challenge, that of supervising the invoice processors in Accounts Payable. This allowed her to learn new functionality within Oracle and to add new processes and procedures related to payables to her “tool kit”.
Ms. Justice was recently promoted to the Central Disbursements Senior Manager position to encompass responsibility for all facets of Accounts Payable, Travel, Payroll, and Labor Distribution.
JANINE NELSON, DIRECTOR of ACCOUNTING & DEPARTMENT ADMINISTRATION
Janine Nelson, Accounting Manager for OHSU's Central Financial Services group, joined the OHSU family in June 2001 as an Accountant, and later Accounting Manager for the OHSU Foundation. Her team includes accountants and financial and business analysts in the areas of general accounting, capital accounting, the internal billing system (IBS), and systems applications. Previous experience includes work in a variety of industries including cable television, cellular service, sawmill machinery manufacturing, and property development/management. She graduated from Oregon State University in Education and from Portland State University in Accounting.
Debbie Todd, Treasury Director
Debbie Todd graduated magna cum Laude from Central Washington University, double-majoring in Accounting and Business Administration (Finance) with a minor in Economics. From 1993 to 2000, she worked in higher education and public accounting. In 2000, Ms. Todd joined Chelan County Public Utility District. During her tenure at Chelan, she worked in both generation accounting and Treasury, focusing on enterprise accounting, cash management, investments, and debt. Ms. Todd was promoted to Treasury Supervisor, a position she held for three years prior to taking the opportunity to relocate to Portland to join OHSU as Treasury Manager in 2007.
