Welcome to OHSU Visiting Student Clinical Placement

There are onboarding requirements for all students.  These requirements must be completed along with your role-specific tasks before you can come to campus. Check with your school's Clinical Placement Coordinator before you start these steps to ensure you have an approved clinical placement at OHSU.

This site is designed for non-OHSU nursing and other clinical students.  If you are a current employee at OHSU and seeking a clinical placement, please view our O2 page for more information.

First steps

Complete primary Compass modules

Compass is OHSU's Learning and Performance Management System.  Access Compass by completing the Compass online request form for visiting students. If you are a current OHSU employee, use your employee Compass account to review and complete the modules listed below.

Complete the list of the primary required modules. Once finished, you will be instructed on getting a student badge. Some placement roles require additional Compass modules. Review specific requirements in the Allied Health Student or BSN & APRN tabs.

In Compass, you will need to add courses to your transcript. You can self-assign by first searching for the course in the search field. Then, when you have found the class, click on the class to self-assign. Self-assigning adds the course to your list of required courses to complete.

Primary Required Modules

All students will complete the following modules:

  1. Information Privacy and Security Essentials 2024
  2. Respect at the University
  3. Integrity Foundations
  4. Abuse, Neglect, and Interpersonal Violence (IPV)
  5. USP 800 Hazardous Drugs in the Healthcare Setting
  6. Annual Competency in Basic Principles of Infection Prevention
  7. General Safety

Clinical role requirements

Depending on the clinical rotation you may have additional requirements to complete before you start your rotation.

Please review the Allied Health Student or BSN & APRN tabs for more detailed information.

How to get your badge

To obtain your student badge follow these steps:

  1. Complete all required Compass modules.
  2. Verify that your Clinical Placement Coordinator has provided all other required documentation. Once Clinical Education has this information an electronic badge request will be made and you or your placement coordinator will be notified.
  3. Before your first Clinical Rotation date, you will need to get your OHSU Student ID badge from the Campus Access and Commute Services office. Remember to bring a government-issued ID and COVID vaccination card.

What if I forgot my badge? You cannot be on Campus as a student without an identification badge.  You will need to go to the parking and badge office and ask for a temporary badge.

Additional resources

Below is additional helpful information for students. Be sure to review the student handbook.  You do not need to print off the document but please review it.  You will be expected to adhere to all OHSU practice standards and policies.  If you have any questions, ask your preceptor!   Student Handbook

OHSU parking

Visit the OHSU Parking Website or contact OHSU parking at 503-494-8283 or parking@ohsu.edu for instructions on where to buy a parking pass and park.

Parking on the Marquam Hill Campus is limited and closely monitored.  Do not park in visitor parking areas – parking is monitored and you may be subject to a very high fine. As a visiting student, you fall under the Guest, Vendors, Contactors parking category.

If you choose to drive to the hill, please be sure to allow enough time on the first day of your rotation/training to get a parking permit, park, and find your rotation or training location.

Informational handouts

Please review the OHSU Useful Phone Numbers and Resources handout.  You do not need to print the document but please review it.  You can always return to this site to access the numbers again.

The Problem-Solving Tips document contains helpful tips for frequently asked questions.

Additional OHSU access

Epic access is determined by your role.  If you require access for your clinical you will be notified of the Epic training date, time, and location. Please note for in-person or live webinar Epic Training, if you are more than 10 minutes late, you will not be allowed into the training.

A network ID will be provided to you if you will have Epic access.  You will be notified of how to receive your personal network ID if it is applicable to your role.

What to wear

Unless you have been provided other instructions, wear scrubs of any color and closed-toe shoes with no openings.

For any training requirements before your clinical rotation (Epic Training, etc.) attire is business casual and jeans are OK.
