More than 5,000 Portland area residents are expected to take steps to improve their heart health when they participate in the American Heart Association’s Heart & Stroke Walk this year. The annual event, which raises funds to fight heart disease and stroke is a non-competitive, three-mile walk open to everyone. 

This year’s chairman of the walk is OHSU President Joe Robertson. “Many Americans are still unaware that heart disease is their No. 1 health threat,” said Robertson.  “I hope to raise awareness of this issue and remind the community about the important role that research plays in our mission to save lives.  As the American Heart Association’s largest fundraising event, the Heart & Stroke Walk is a vital resource, with funds raised benefiting heart and stroke research in our community that will help us discover the next life-saving advancement.”

Local 2012 Heart & Stroke Walk attractions include:

  • Family Go Cards provided by Regence BlueCross BlueShield of Oregon with 52 playing cards to help families make fitness fun and attainable.
  • Free blood pressure checks provided by Kaiser Permanente in Portland and PeaceHealth SW Medical Center in SW Washington.
  • Heart-healthy activities for kids and adults provided by Oregon Health & Science University in Portland and The Vancouver Clinic in S.W. Washington.
  • Free Hands-Only CPR demonstrations provided by Legacy Health in Portland.
