The family of Kristina Shevchenko has requested the following statement be sent to media:

“Everyone is wondering how Kristina is doing. There isn’t going to be a drastic change for some time because the road to recovery is a long and slow process. We would like to share that Kristina is talking with the family and is able to eat and sleep comfortably, which is what she needs to do at the moment.

“Many have been wondering if there is another way to donate besides texting. In response, we have set up an online donation page as well as a bank account for those who are interested in donating.

“Donations to benefit Kristina Shevchenko can be made at any Wells Fargo branch. To donate online, please visit our Web page: www.wepay.com/donations/kristina-shevchenko.

Media statement from the family of Kristina Shevchenko

12/12/12 Portland, Ore.

We would like to extend our sincere condolences to the families of the other shooting victims. Our prayers are with them at this terrible time.

We are deeply grateful for the quick response of the emergency service providers, public safety and police officers as well as Clackamas Town Center staff. We would also like to thank everyone at OHSU Hospital. We very much appreciate the incredible support we’ve received from friends, family members and the Portland community.

Our daughter, Kristina Shevchenko, 15, remains in serious condition but is alert and talking. She informed us today that the first person to be thanked is Alyona, her friend and schoolmate at Clackamas Middle College, who immediately called 911 and remained by her side until the emergency service providers arrived.

Today, Dr. Laszlo Kiraly, M.D., one of Kristina’s trauma surgeons, will provide you with an update on Kristina’s injuries and condition.

Our family does not wish to do interviews today, or in the future, as we focus our full attention on Kristina’s recovery.

We have created a Facebook page where friends and members of the community can leave comments. Individuals wishing to contribute to Kristina's medical expenses can text the word "SUPPORT" to 28594.
