OHSU Prepares for Sam Jackson Park Road Closure During City Road Construction

07/08/11  Portland, Ore.

Beginning, Monday, July 11, Sam Jackson Park Road, a major access route to Oregon Health & Science University will be closed for six to eight weeks. The City of Portland is closing the road as they construct a retaining wall in response to significant movement of the hillside during the past few months.

Because about 40 percent of all traffic to OHSU comes up Sam Jackson Park Road on a daily basis, significant steps are being taken to ensure patients and visitors receive first priority on the roads.

Resources for patients and visitors

  • Information about traveling to OHSU can be accessed on the front page of OHSU's website: www.ohsu.edu/directions.
  • Live traffic cameras are being installed so the public can view traffic conditions prior to their visit. Once installed, the camera views also will be available at www.ohsu.edu/directions.
  • Visitors also can park at the OHSU Center for Health & Healing and ride the Portland Aerial Tram to OHSU’s Marquam Hill campus.

OHSU has taken significant steps to reduce the number of trips by employees. Its goal is to reduce the number by at least 6,000. (Approximately 30,000 cars travel to and from OHSU each weekday). In order to achieve this reduction, OHSU employees will:

  • Work from off-site locations if possible.
  • Carpool.
  • Take public transportation.
  • Ride the tram.
  • Bicycle.
  • Use valet bike parking at the OHSU Center for Health & Healing to avoid taking their bicycle on the tram.
  • Use temporary off-site parking with shuttle service or access to public transportation.
