02/17/11  Portland, Ore.

Sherwood Kindergartner and OHSU Doernbecher patient Liam Jaussi inspired his schoolmates, teachers, community to join him in raising money to “help kids like him”

WHAT

With the words, “I want to give $6 because I’m 6 years old,” childhood brain cancer survivor Liam Jaussi launched a special fundraising campaign to help other kids with brain cancer called “Liams’ $6 Club.” To date, Liam, and his many enthusiastic supporters at Edy Ridge Elementary have raised more than $10,000 to support brain cancer research at Oregon Health & Science University Doernbecher Children’s Hospital.

This Friday, at an all-school assembly, Liam and his parents will present OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital Foundation representative, Ashley Schmidt, with a large check. Liam’s schoolmates and their families, teachers and staff collected spare change, recycled soda cans, held bake sales and sold jewelry to help him make the donation possible.

"This school year has become a story about Liam Jaussi and the Edy Ridge family that rallied around him to support Doernbecher,” said Frank Luzaich, principal at Edy Ridge Elementary School.

To support Liam’s goal of “helping kids like him,” Edy Ridge staff have created a special “Liam’s $6 Club” Web page. The $6 Club also has a page on Facebook.

DETAILS

When Liam's parents told him that people were donating money at the Heart of Doernbecher Auction to help children at “his hospital,” he ran to his bedroom and returned with his piggy bank. He said, "I'm 6 years old, and I want to give $6." At the November event, amid donations of thousands of dollars, Liam brought his own contribution from his piggy bank.
