OHSU School of Nursing Helps Launch Oregon Assembly for Men in Nursing

10/04/10  Portland, Ore.

The newly formed Oregon chapter of the American Assembly for Men in Nursing will hold its first meeting Wednesday, Oct. 13, at 6 p.m.

WHAT: The Oregon chapter of the American Assembly for Men in Nursing (OCAAMN) will hold its first regular meeting at Oregon Health & Science University. The meeting is open to practicing nurses and nursing students interested in the unique challenges men in nursing face. Nursing is one of the few professions in which men are an underrepresented minority. Currently just 11 percent of licensed nurses in Oregon are men.

“I think the overall goal of nursing is to have a work force that mirrors the people we serve,” said Michael Bleich, Ph.D., R.N., FAAN, dean of the OHSU School of Nursing and co-adviser of the chapter. “The formation of this group will hopefully bring us closer to making that goal a reality.”

The chapter was formed after several exploratory meetings produced strong interest. “It became readily apparent that the interest was there to move forward with forming a chapter,” said Chad E. O’Lynn, Ph.D., R.N., assistant professor of nursing at University of Portland and chapter co-adviser. “We also determined that affiliation with the national men in nursing organization would be a benefit to our group.”

OCAAMN was recently recognized as an official chapter of the American Assembly for Men in Nursing at their annual conference held Sept. 23 in Durham, N.C. Anthony Pabst, a nursing student at OHSU School of Nursing and student leader of the group, represented the local chapter at the national conference. “The purpose of the organization is to create opportunities for camaraderie, mentoring and to promote men’s health,” said Pabst. “The group also hopes to encourage more men to go into nursing and act as a support group for men in nursing and the unique challenges they face.”

WHEN: Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2010, 6 to 7:30 p.m.

WHERE: OHSU School of Nursing, 3455 S.W. U.S. Veterans Hospital Road, Room 358
