Tibetan Monk Builds Healing Mandala for Doernbecher Patients

Sand mandala will take three days to build and is intended to inspire, entertain, release healing

WHAT:   

Tibetan Monk Lama Lobsang Tsultrim from India will create a healing sand mandala, an intricate symbol of world peace and global healing, for the young patients of OHSU Doernbecher Children's Hospital and their families. This event is part of the Wholistic Peace Institute’s Summer Nobel Institute of Peace, taking place at OHSU Doernbecher. The opening and closing ceremonies for the mandala building are free and open to the public.

 

WHEN/Where: 

1) Mandala Opening Ceremony: noon, Thursday, Sept. 4, lobby of OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, S.W. 3181. Sam Jackson Park Road, Portland

2) Wholistic Peace Institute’s Summer Nobel Institute of Peace: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday, Sept 5, OHSU Doernbecher Vey Conference Room. Nobel Peace Prize winner (1985) and chairwoman of the board for Physicians for Social Responsibility, Catherine Thomasson, M.D., will give the keynote lecture. This event is free for students and institute members and $75 for all others. The religious adviser to the Dalai Lama and OHSU Doernbecher physicians Thomas Koch, M.D., and Dana Braner, M.D., among others, also will speak. 3) Mandala Dissolution Closing Ceremony: noon, Sunday, Sept. 7, begins in Doernbecher lobby ends at South Waterfront, Block 23.

 

DETAILS:                 

The mandala takes three days to build and is intended to inspire, entertain and release healing. On the third day, the mandala is ‘dissolved’ and small bags of its sand will be given to everyone who attends. The Lama Tsultrim then will ride the Portland Aerial Tram to the South Waterfront.
