First OHSU School of Dentistry Hooding, Honors Convocation Live Via Internet

05/30/06  Portland, Ore.

The live Internet broadcast, which starts at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 2, also is a first for OHSU

For the first time in OHSU history, graduation will be accessible via the Internet. While commencement exercises for all OHSU schools previously have been broadcast on the Portland Cable Access Channel, the School of Dentistry will make history at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 2, by broadcasting its hooding and honors convocation ceremony live via the Internet.

"We got the idea to put our hooding on the Internet when a graduating dental student told me her father was unable to attend because he had to work," said Mark Mitchell, associate dean for student affairs, OHSU School of Dentistry. "Because there is limited seating in the OHSU Auditorium where we hold the School of Dentistry hooding, we also expect there will be many friends and family members of graduating dental students, as well as people interested in the hooding who can't travel, who will be viewing the ceremony on the Web."

Anyone with access to the Internet and RealPlayer software will be able to view the School of Dentistry hooding and honors ceremony. People who want to view the ceremony will be able to log in as early as 10:15 a.m. Friday, June 2. Viewers must have the most current version of RealPlayer (available free of charge at www.real.com).  The direct link to the event is http://media.ohsu.edu/ramgen/broadcast/SOD.rm.

While other universities have long been broadcasting their commencement exercises live on the Internet, it is unclear how many Portland-area colleges have tried the technology for their own graduations, nor are there any reliable figures as to whether any of the nation's dental schools have used the Internet to broadcast commencement activities.

Seventy OHSU dental students are expected to receive their lilac "hoods"- signifying graduation from four years of dental school -- on June 2 in the OHSU Auditorium (Old Library) on the Marquam Hill Campus. Special dental school awards also will be presented.

Commencement exercises for students from all four OHSU schools is at 5 p.m. Friday, June 2, in the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, 1000 S.W. Broadway, Portland. Approximately 976 degrees will be conferred. OHSU President Peter Kohler, M.D., is the keynote speaker.
