Third Annual KWJJ Radiothon Raises Support and Funds for Kids at Doernbecher

03/12/03    Portland, Ore.

The third annual "KWJJ Cares for Kids" Radiothon, presented by Foresters and John L. Scott Real Estate to benefit the children of Doernbecher Children's Hospital, is March 13 and 14, 2003. The radiothon will begin at 5:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 13, and will conclude Friday, March 14, at 9 p.m. The event will be broadcast live from the Doernbecher lobby on KWJJ 99.5 FM.

The broadcast will feature patient interviews, including one with Oregon's 2002 Children's Miracle Network Champion Child, Scott Tilgner. The 15-year-old from Vancouver, Wash., was successfully treated at Doernbecher two years ago for a serious infection of the brain and spinal fluid. Once in a coma and on life-support at Doernbecher, today Tilgner is back in school and playing his favorite sports. He is grateful for his second chance.

During the radiothon, volunteers will collect funds raised through the "Change Bandit" program -- an annual program in which hundreds of community volunteers collect change from friends and co-workers -- to benefit Doernbecher kids. During the radiothon, volunteers from Umpqua Bank will donate their time to count change collected through the program and delivered to the hospital.

KWJJ listeners can make donations by calling 866 291-KIDS (5437) or, within Portland, 503 418-KIDS (5437). Donations can also be made online at: www.ohsu.edu/ohsf/DCHFSecurePages/support/donation_form.html

With nationally recognized programs in pediatric heart surgery, neurosurgery and cancer, Doernbecher Children's Hospital provides primary and specialized care to 40,000 kids each year from Oregon, southwest Washington and beyond. As part of OHSU, the state's only academic health and research center, Doernbecher combines healing, teaching, discovery and community service in its mission to improve the health of all children.

The Doernbecher Foundation's mission is to secure private philanthropic support for Doernbecher Children's Hospital and to invest and manage gifts responsibly in accordance with donors' wishes.
