Peter Kohler names Joe Robertson interim dean of School of Medicine

Christine Cassel, M.D., M.A.C.P., will be stepping down as dean of the Oregon Health & Science University School of Medicine to become president of the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) and the ABIM Foundation, effective July 1, 2003. She has served as dean since Jan. 1, 2002. Her appointment to the ABIM will be confirmed by a vote of the full board of directors on Feb. 21, 2003.

"It saddens me to leave this wonderful institution, and I trust the friendships I have made here will be enduring ones," Cassel said. "I will be working with my colleagues in the Office of the Dean and other OHSU leaders to ensure that all of the important work of the school continues smoothly."

"In selecting Christine Cassel as the president of the American Board of Internal Medicine and its foundation, ABIM has gained as its leader a respected expert in geriatric medicine, medical ethics and the quality of clinical care," said Peter Kohler, M.D., OHSU President. "I congratulate her and wish her well as she takes the helm of this prestigious national organization."

Joseph Robertson, Jr., M.D., M.B.A., professor and chairman of ophthalmology in the School of Medicine and director of OHSU's Casey Eye Institute has agreed to serve as interim dean. Robertson first served as interim dean from July 1 to Dec. 31, 2001, after the retirement of Joseph Bloom, M.D.

"We are fortunate to have an experienced and very skilled administrative team that I am confident will help lead the School of Medicine through this transition while continuing to foster its progress and its commitment to institutional ideals," Robertson said.
