Cab Drivers Give Bikes to Children with Special Needs

08/10/01    Portland, Ore.

WHAT:

A group of Radio Cab taxi drivers who gather and repair donated bikes for children will visit Oregon Health & Science University's Child Development and Rehabilitation Center at Doernbecher Children's Hospital to give 28 bikes to children with special needs. The children will receive a bike helmet and a picture of themselves with their new wheels.

"I just want to bring a little happiness to children at the hospital because I remember how difficult it was when my child was hospitalized," said David Yandell, whose child died in his arms at Doernbecher 19 years ago. The program was Yandell's idea, and he and fellow drivers and community donors have collected more than 450 bikes since the program began in May. Yandell believes the bikes will empower the children and may be a financial gift for parents who are overwhelmed with medical expenses.

WHEN:

Friday, August 10, 11 a.m. - 1 p.m.

WHERE:

Child Development and Rehabilitation Center, 707 S.W. Gaines, OHSU, Marquam Hill campus
