First Technology Credit Union will present the Doernbecher Children's Hospital Foundation with a $160,000 check in the lobby of Doernbecher Children's Hospital, Wednesday, Jan. 3 at 10 a.m. Sen. Charles Starr (R-Hillsboro) and Sen. - Elect Margaret Carter (D-Portland) also will be at Doernbecher in support of this generous donation. First Tech and the Credit Union Association of Oregon also will donate a wagon and a handcarved wooden camel, similar to a rocking horse, to the hospital. The wagons are used to provide younger children rides to tests as well as sightseeing trips around the hospital. The wagons are important to Doernbecher because they offer kids a fun and familiar way to get travel in the hospital. The financial contribution brings the credit unions closer to their pledge of $2.5 million, which will go toward pediatric research, clinical care and teaching.
The monetary donation comes as the result of a year-long fund-raising effort, which includes a celebrity golf tournament dubbed the "Hank and Moose" Open, named for baseball legends Hank Bauer and Moose Skowron.
"We're very passionate about this," said First Tech President Tom Sargent. "We take our responsibility with regard to this charity very seriously. And, if we can have fun raising the money, so much the better."
More than 100 people played in the golf tournament, including former baseball greats Enos Slaughter, Jake Gibbs and Don Larsen.
The CU For Kids program was created in 1986 to provide an avenue for credit unions to contribute to children's causes. Since then more than $3 million has been raised for Doernbecher Children's Hospital in Portland, Sacred Heart Hospital in Eugene and Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford.
Doernbecher patients will be at the presentation to help accept the donations and enjoy the new wagon and camel. Tours of the Credit Unions For Kids floor will immediately follow the check presentation to show donors how their generous donation is benefiting children in need.
