Children at Doernbecher, Sacred Heart and Rogue Valley Hospitals Benefit From Campaign

The credit unions of Oregon and Southwest Washington have done it again . . . for the kids! The final tally is in for the annual Credit Unions For Kids campaign, which benefits Doernbecher Children's Hospital in Portland, and the pediatric units of Sacred Heart Hospital in Eugene and Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford. The credit unions' 1999-2000 campaign raised $510,000 - the second highest total in their 15-year effort to improve health care for children.

"We couldn't be happier with the credit unions' continued commitment to improving the quality of care for children in the Northwest," commented Jon Ulsh, executive director of the Doernbecher Foundation. "Year after year they have shown their support with both words and much-needed money."

"The credit unions of Oregon and Southwest Washington have a long-established tradition of supporting the local community - especially those organizations that support the health, education and welfare of children," said Tim Wheeler, chairman of the Oregon Credit Union League and co-chairman of the 1999-2000 Credit Unions For Kids campaign. "We are delighted the momentum we have established over the past few years has continued with this year's fund-raising effort."

This year's fund-raising effort marks the end of the first year of a five-year campaign by the credit unions of Oregon and Southwest Washington to raise an additional $2.5 million to endow the chair for the Department of Pediatrics at Doernbecher Children's Hospital. According to Ulsh, "This new commitment from credit unions will help secure Doernbecher's position as one of the very best children's hospitals in the country."

To honor the credit unions' long-standing commitment to the community and the health care needs of children, administrators at Doernbecher dedicated the seventh floor of the new Children's Hospital as the Credit Unions For Kids Outpatient Clinics in 1997. Since 1986, the credit unions of Oregon and Southwest Washington have helped raise close to $3.3 million . . . and they aren't finished yet.
