Police officers from Oregon and Southwest Washington will donate their time - and hair - to benefit children at Oregon Health Sciences University's Doernbecher Children's Hospital. The third annual Great Shave-Off is scheduled for Wednesday, April 5. The program raises money for Doernbecher through individual contributions to the Crop-A-Cop program. For every $500 raised, an officer will get his/her head shaved to support children with cancer who lose their hair after radiation and chemotherapy treatments. Three female officers are among the daring group that will be shaved.
Ten-year-old, stubbled-headed Mollie Hauck will be one of two Doernbecher patients to shave some of the officer's heads. Last August, she had her head shaved after receiving the first bone marrow transplant in the country to treat severe juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.
Last year the Crop-A-Cop program raised $70,000 and included 25 police departments. Program coordinator Shannon Gentemann says this year 30 departments are participating. "We've had such great luck with the police departments. They've all been really enthusiastic about helping the kids at Doernbecher," says Gentemann.
The program began three years ago, when Vancouver police officer Navin Sharma conceived the idea. That first year, $21,000 was raised through the participation of Portland and Vancouver police departments. The program has expanded to include other areas of Oregon and Southwest Washington.
The shaving will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 5, at Supercuts on 82nd and Powell. The public is welcome. Crop-A-Cop is sponsored by John L. Scott Real Estate and Duraguard Products. Supercuts donates its time and staff to shave the heads of the officers.
