Elks Eye Injury Prevention Poster Contest

10:30 a.m. to Noon, Saturday, March 25

Lobby, Casey Eye Institute

Young artists with an eye for injury prevention show off their talents this weekend at the Casey Eye Institute on the campus of Oregon Health Sciences University. Artwork by grade-school students from all over the state will be on display during final judging of the Elks Eye Injury Prevention Poster Contest on March 25. The event is free and open to the public.

Saturday's competition will feature the work of 21 finalists out of approximately 8,000 entries. The finalists were chosen during regional judging at Elks lodges throughout the state. First-place, second-place and third place winners will receive savings bonds. In addition, the top three posters will remain on display at the Elks Children's Eye Clinic year-round.

This year's competition should feature a wide variety of art styles. Participants were allowed to use crayons, watercolors, fabric and other materials in the design of their posters, and creativity was encouraged.

The contest is sponsored by the Oregon State Elks Association Visual Committee with the goal of educating children and their families on the importance of eye safety.

The Elks Children's Eye Clinic in the Casey Eye Institute has helped an estimated 100,000 patients. Through the years, the Oregon State Elks donated close to $7 million to OHSU. Those funds pay for personnel, the latest equipment and technology, medical supplies, as well as corrective eyeglasses and contact lenses for those who could not otherwise afford them. In addition, James Casey and George Casey, co-founders of the United Parcel Service and Oregon Elks members, also donated millions to build the Casey Eye Institute.
