OHSU School of Dentistry, 611 S.W. Campus Drive (Marquam Hill)

Oregon Health Sciences University's School of Dentistry is celebrating its 100th anniversary as it gets ready to move into the next millennium. The school is the only academic institution in Oregon that trains dentists and dental hygienists.

In celebration of the past, present and future, the School of Dentistry is opening its doors for the public to see what it's all about. The open house will be Friday, Oct. 1 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the School of Dentistry, 611 S.W. Campus Drive. The open house also celebrates the Dental Hygiene program's 50th anniversary.

The event will feature five floors of exciting interactive displays about dental research, education and treatment. Vistors can see what the inside of a tooth looks like with the use of a dental operating microscope and learn more about teeth bleaching. Thanks to the latest computer technology, guests can see what their teeth would look like after wearing braces. In addition, tours of the school's clinics, labs and classrooms will give visitors an idea of life in the academic dental world, or they can experience life as a dentist by playing with a tooth drill. Gourmet refreshments will also be available throughout the school.

At 1:30 p.m., the dean of the school, Sharon Turner, D.D.S., J.D., will provide a forecast for the future of dentistry beyond the year 2000 and cut the ceremonial cake in recognition of the school's centennial.

OHSU's School of Dentistry is proud of its national reputation for producing outstanding clinical dentists who pass their board exams with some of the highest scores in the country. In addition, more than 88 percent of the dentists currently practicing in Oregon graduated from the school.
