OHSU Celebrate 10th Annual Transplant Picnic
07/15/99 Portland, Ore.
Close to 400 recipients will gather on Saturday, July 17
Oregon Health Sciences University is celebrating the gift of life with close to 400 organ transplant recipients and their families at OHSU's 10th Annual Transplant Picnic Saturday, July 17 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the OHSU campus. Activities include guest speaker U.S. Rep. Darlene Hooley at 11:30 a.m., Dr. John Barry shares his reflections on 40 years of the kidney program, reunions of staff and transplant families, transplant group photos and a picnic lunch.
A special guest will be joining Hooley, Seth Catterson of Woodburn. Eight-year-old Seth had a heart transplant at OHSU in 1990 when he was four months old. He traveled to Washington, D.C. earlier this year for the First Family Pledge Drive in Congress to encourage organ and tissue donation. Hooley represents Oregon's 5th congressional district and is a strong supporter of organ donation. She has supported 15 percent budget increases for medical research at the National Institutes of Health for the last two years.
The picnic will also recognize OHSU's kidney transplant program's 40th anniversary. Since the program started in 1959, the staff has performed more than 2,700 kidney transplants. In addition, OHSU has performed more than 900 heart, liver, pancreas and lung transplants. (The liver program is a partnership with the Portland Veterans Affairs Medical Center.)
OHSU Hospital has Oregon's only comprehensive solid organ transplant program. Patient outcomes in the university's program continue to exceed national averages.
More information about becoming an organ donor will be available at the picnic and by calling the Oregon Donor Program at 1-800-452-1369.
