Teatro Milagro and OHSU to Offer Performance on Breast Cancer Prevention and Survival

07/14/99    Portland, Ore.

Teatro Milagro, a Portland-based Hispanic arts organization, in collaboration with the Oregon Health Sciences University Women's Health Clinic, will sponsor an evening of entertainment and education in the fight against breast cancer. The free event will take place at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 28, in the Great Hall of the Old Library on the OHSU campus.

Fortuna de la Vida, a bilingual play written in dramatic telenovela style, helps portray the benefits of going to the clinic for breast cancer screening. The play was written by Teatro Milagro resident artist Rebecca Martinez after interviewing low-income Mexican women who had survived breast cancer. The play is their stories brought to life in a dramatic 30-minute presentation that is both endearing and informative.

The performance will be accompanied by a post-play discussion and refreshments. The social atmosphere is designed to be fun and to inform attendees about the free cancer screening services available through the state Breast and Cervical Cancer Partnership, in which the Women's Health Clinic participates.

The event is made possible through generous funding from the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, the Templeton Foundation and ODS Health Plans. For more information, contact Helen Phillips at the Women's Health Clinic at (503) 494-1700.
