IACUC Notes
Here are links to IACUC notes for the Oregon National Primate Research Center for the years 2005 through 2007
Every institution that conducts animal studies is required to have an Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC or eye-AH-cook as it is frequently pronounced) IACUC committees are required by the Animal Welfare Act, the centerpiece of this country's animal welfare laws. IACUCs include veterinarians, animal care staff, a member of the public and scientists (Note: if a scientist's own work is being reviewed by the IACUC, they abstain from the discussion and voting).
What are they?
The role of the IACUC is to review each and every proposed study involving animals to ensure that they are being done in the most ethical way. These meeting notes document that process. When the IACUC reviews each study it can: 1. Approve the research as proposed 2. Propose changes to the research to ensure the most ethical approach (common) 3. Ask for more information from the researchers 3. Reject the study. IACUCs also review any proposed changes to ongoing research and they conduct annual inspections of research and animal care facilities.
What do they show?
The records demonstrate the tremendous amount of time and effort that is spent ensuring that our research is conducted in an ethical way.
