A little more than 4 years ago we received a phone call that would change our lives forever. Our family doctor called to tell us that our six year old son Grant had lymphoma. We were immediately referred to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital and Dr. Greg Thomas confirmed a cancer diagnosis of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). Dr. Thomas then spent four hours with us explaining what it meant, how to fight the cancer, survival rates, and answering all our questions.
From that point on, Doernbecher became an integral part of our lives. Treatment for ALL is more like running a marathon. In total Grant would undergo 3 ½ years of consistent chemotherapy to beat his cancer. When Grant suffered a challenging setback from complications in July 2010, Dr. Thomas was a rock for us, and he was relentless. He brought in every specialist you can imagine, and by the end of October 2010, Grant’s strength had returned and he was literally back on his feet. On April 28, 2011, Grant took his last round of chemotherapy!
Today, looking back on this incredibly difficult journey, we are so grateful for the care and support we received. With every visit to Doernbecher we were treated like family. The nurses always remembered our names, there was always a toy or stuffed animal on the bed for Grant and his little brother Wyatt – thanks to generous donors like you – and it felt like the entire staff was there for the sole purpose of helping our family and healing our son. We have our son and our family is whole thanks to the incredible work being done at Doernbecher and the incredible people like you who support it.
As parents, we pray that we won’t have to return to Doernbecher because one of our children is sick, but knowing the hospital is there if we need it is a blessing we are thankful for every day. Please be generous and make your gift today. No matter the size, your renewed support will mean the world to the families who benefit.
