Graduate Programs
Peter Gillespie, a joint faculty member of the Vollum and the Oregon Hearing Research Center (OHRC), has directed the Neuroscience Graduate Program since 2002. Under his direction, this university-wide program supports about 50 predoctoral students each year with participation from over 100 faculty members in various OHSU institutes and departments. The Neuroscience Graduate Program is supported by two training grants administered through the Vollum (Richard Goodman, P.I.) and the Center for Research on Occupational and Environmental Toxicology (Gary Banker, P.I.). The program continues to attract applicants from the best undergraduate programs across the country. The students graduating from the program are currently pursuing postdoctoral training at several top research institutions, including U.C. San Francisco, Rockefeller University, University of Washington, and Johns Hopkins.

Vollum faculty member Gary Thomas was appointed by the dean of the School of Medicine as director of the Program in Molecular and Cellular Biosciences in 2002. This graduate program represents the basic science departments and associated centers and institutes at OHSU and has been reorganized under Thomas’s direction. Thomas, along with Michael Forte, has helped institute an updated curriculum and has obtained a training grant to provide support for the first and second year students in the program.
