Human Frontier Awards
Four Vollum faculty members, John Adelman, Wolfhard Almers, Craig Jahr, and Gary Westbrook, received grants from the Human Frontier Science Program. Adelman's grant, "Molecular and Cellular Basis for Kinetics and Modulation of SK Channels in Central Neurons," was completed in 2002. This $1.1 million international consortium involved collaborations with Bernd Fakler, University of Tubingen, Paola Pedarzani, Max-Planck Institute, and former Vollum faculty member Neil Marrion, University of Bristol, and examined the physiology of small-conductance potassium channels.
The Almers grant is a collaboration with Claes Wollheim, University of Geneva, and Katsuhiko Mikoshiba, Tokyo University. This project utilizes electron and fluorescence microscopy and capacitance measurements to study the kinetics of neurotransmitter secretion.
The Jahr grant, "Synaptic and Extrasynaptic Signaling in the Cerebellar Cortex," is a collaborative effort with Shigeo Okabe, Tokyo Medical and Dental University, Michael Häusser, University College of London, and Zoltan Nusser, Institute of Experimental Medicine, Hungarian Academy of Sciences, to elucidate the actions of glutamate in the cerebellum. This project uses molecular biological techniques, ultrastructural reconstructions, computer modeling, and electrophysiology. The three-year grant began in December 2000 with a total award of $750,000.
Westbrook collaborated with Peter Jonas, Physiologisches Institüt der Universitat, Freiburg, Germany, Kunihiko Obata, National Institution for Physiological Science, Okazaki, Japan, and William Wisden, University College, London, England, to study inhibitory signaling in interneuron networks.
