Community Outreach
Vollum members participated in a variety of outreach programs and community service activities during 2002–2004:
Gary Westbrook, Ed McCleskey, Susan Amara, John Notis (Operations Manager) and Lori Vaskalis (Illustrations) took part in Brain Awareness Week activities at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry. Several postdoctoral fellows, students, and technicians from the Vollum, including Coleen Atkins, Sonja Billes, Stephen Davee, Viviana Davila, Victor Derkach, Tara Dillon, Rachel Dumont, Kate Ellacott, Aaron Gerlach, Jennifer Hill, Susan Ingram-Osborn, Yoojin Kim, Wei-Sheng Lee, Emilie Miller, Linda Overstreet, Jackie Parker, Mike Pellegrino, Kevin Poth, Jose Serrano, Kanji Takahashi, Adriana Voss-Andreae, and Spencer Watts, also participated in this event to help increase the public understanding of neurobiology and its related health issues.

Neuroscience Research Town Hall |
Richard Goodman represented the Vollum in a Neuroscience Research Town Hall discussion with Senator Ron Wyden and a collection of neuroscientists and neuro-advocacy groups as part of the Brain Awareness Week activities.
Vollum representatives were also active in a variety of school-oriented activities:
McCleskey, Miller and John Schmitt served as advisors in the Robert Gray Middle School science fair as part of the SUN (Schools Uniting Neighborhoods) initiative.
Davee, Miller, Pellegrino, Vaskalis, and Stephanie Christensen were presenters at the Oregon Kids Judge! Neuroscience Fair, in which fourth-graders from area schools judge scientific exhibits created by faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and students.
Malcolm Low, Tom Soderling, Suzanne Appleyard, Guruprasad Medigeshi, Jennifer Michel and Miller were judges for the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair at the Oregon Convention Center in May of 2004, an event which drew more than 1,400 young scientists from over 40 countries.
Roger Cone was elected to represent the Oregon City School District on their board and is a member of the Portland Regional Arts and Culture Council.
