Theme 2
RP006 Katze
Investigators in RP006 use a combination of biological methods, mathematics, and high-throughput technologies to study how viruses such as influenza virus, Ebola virus, and the SARS coronavirus cause disease. This combination of approaches is known as systems biology because it provides a way to look at complex biological systems in their entirety. High-throughput technologies are capable of simultaneously measuring the expression of thousands of genes and the abundance of their encoded proteins. Mathematics and computer modeling are used to combine this information with information about disease state (such as the amount of lung tissue damage) to identify new targets for antiviral drugs or to develop better vaccines. |
