NATIONAL SUICIDE PREVENTION STRATEGY HEARING ARRIVES IN PORTLAND

OHSU One of Four Sites for Surgeon General's Office to Take Public Comment

PORTLAND, Ore. - The U.S. Surgeon General's Office will hold one of four nationwide public hearings on the National Suicide Prevention Strategy on Tuesday, Oct. 3 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Oregon Health Sciences University Auditorium.

The hearings seek to include public comment on the strategy's draft goals and objectives. The hearing will begin with a videotaped greeting from U.S. Surgeon General David Satcher, M.D., Ph.D., and a welcome from Joseph Bloom, M.D., dean of the OHSU School of Medicine.

The day's schedule is as follows:

8:30 a.m.Welcome and greetings
9:00 a.m.Overview of proposed National Suicide Prevention Strategy
9:20 a.m.Public testimony begins
(Testimony is divided into three categories: Awareness at 9:20; Intervention at 10:35; and Methodology at 11:15)
11:50 a.m.Lunch
1:15 p.m.Panel: Meeting Challenges of Suicide Prevention, Regional Experience
2:00 p.m.Public testimony continues
4:30 p.m.Closing remarks and wrap-up
