OREGON'S THINK FIRST CHAPTER AT OHSU HOSTS INJURY PREVENTION CONFERENCE FOR TEENS ON OCT. 2

DETAILS: The purpose of the conference is to provide a forum for teens, educators and community agencies to discuss injury prevention among a segment of the population at high risk: our children. The conference coincides with First Monday 2000: Unite to End Gun Violence, a national campaign promoting education and action to end gun violence. First Monday is always held on the first day of the Supreme Court term each year.

Topics of discussion will include:

• Safety in school: violence and weapons
• Impaired driving: alcohol and drugs
• Depression and suicide
• Road rage: anger management
• Violence in the community
• Violence in teen relationships

THINK FIRST is a national, nonprofit organization founded by neurosurgeons across the country. The mission of THINK FIRST is to educate young people about the prevention of brain and spinal cord injuries. Oregon's chapter is under the supervision of neurosurgeon Edward Neuwelt, M.D., a professor of neurology and neurosurgery in OHSU's School of Medicine.

Editor's Note: At 2 p.m., the students will summarize what they've learned during the day of discussion and problem solving. This is the best opportunity for the media to visit with the students and hear their stories.
